Comparing democratic profiles
A radar of the five V-Dem dimensions to compare countries and see what kind of democracy each one is.
View data table
What it shows
The radar compares five dimensions: electoral, liberal, participatory, deliberative and egalitarian. A broad, balanced polygon suggests homogeneous checks and balances. A polygon that is high on elections but low on deliberation or liberal rights describes a hybrid regime or an electoral autocracy.
How it is calculated
Scores on the five V-Dem indices are used for a selected set of countries. Values are shown on a 0-1 scale and accompanied by a table with the exact figures and the dataset version.
What it does not show
The radar is a descriptive tool. It does not classify regimes on its own or replace reading the components. Two countries with the same polygon may have arrived there through very different trajectories.
